Iceland

The Icelandic proverb “Fjarlægðin gerir fjöllin blá” translates as “Distance makes mountains blue”. Literally, it refers to a familiar optical effect: mountains viewed from afar take on a bluish tint that grows softer and hazier with distance. In black and white photography, that blue becomes a gradient of greys, receding into lighter tones that suggest depth and remoteness. Metaphorically, the phrase speaks to the idea that things often seem more beautiful when viewed from a distance.

This two-part collection is the result of a recent trip to Iceland, and it will include both black and white and colour images (in a separate project). Expect lots of glaciers, basalt cliffs and volcanic plains. This project is being updated regularly with new images.
